Silver Bay - Part 1

Fine Crushing

In Silver Bay, the crushed taconite containing about 25% iron is offloaded from the trains and passed through a series of crushers and tumbling devices that grind the pieces into a powder that is finer than face powder.

Magnetic Separation

Operators send the powder through revolving drums containing powerful magnets that separate the iron-bearing particles from the waste called "tailings."
